An RMIT Short Courses facilitator is displaying her handmade shoes at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), celebrating Australia’s history and unique voice in the fashion industry.
The 200 Years of Australian Fashion exhibition runs until 31 July 2016 at the Ian Potter Centre and presents more than 120 works from over 90 designers.
Claire Best originally created the painted derby shoes for the NGV’s Melbourne Now exhibition in 2013, after which the NGV acquired them for their permanent collection of fashion and textiles.
Best said she was excited to see her work displayed amongst other culturally important items at the exhibition.
“They are part of my ongoing love of hand-dying and different leather treatments, the shoe as a sculptural object and surface,” she said.
“There is something very liberating about hand-dying the leather having spent hours and hours crafting a pair of shoes by hand.
“I enjoy the randomness of the brush strokes and drawing. They are meant to be a playful take on a traditional craft.”
Best teaches the Shoe Making: Creating Footwear by Hand course at RMIT.
The short course is an ideal foundation for people who are interested in the craft of designing and making footwear by hand.
Participants familiarise themselves with the skills and techniques required for shoe making; such as pattern making, cutting leather by hand, sewing and finishing.
It is conducted in a specialised leather working studio at RMIT's Brunswick campus, where traditional technique combines with state-of-the-art resources and expert tuition.
