OPG & Lateral Cephalometric Radiography (Extra-Oral)

Overview

An OPG is a panoramic or wide view x-ray of the lower face, which displays all the teeth of the upper and lower jaw on a single film. It demonstrates the number, position and growth of all the teeth including those that have not yet surfaced or erupted.

The course course covers theory and practical learning activities is delivered by teachers who are subject matter specialists and qualified radiographers.

• Introduction into Panoramic imaging
• Dental Anatomy and Panoramic imaging
• Image quality
• Digital vs Analog imaging
• Image formation
• Radiation safety
• Common faults
• Exposure parameters
• Patient management
• Practical sessions using equipment.

 

Ideal for

Dental Assistants, Dental hygienists, Oral health therapists and Dental therapists who hold a Certificate IV in Dental Assisting (Radiography), a current Intra Oral Licence and registered with AHPRA.

Participants are advised to bring their own lunch or purchase from the local cafes.

Outcome

By the end of the course, learners should have a sound knowledge of:
• how to use computerised/digital radiography equipment,
• the principles of the extra-oral radiography and cephalometry technique,
• how to determine image characterises to minimise re-takes,
• how to select and prepare dental radiographic imaging equipment appropriate to the procedure,
• radiographic anatomy, analogy film, processing faults and production of x-rays,
• biological effects of ionizing radiation
• radiation protection and the Radiation Safety Act (Victoria) and regulations.

Pre-requisites

Participants must have a Certificate IV in Dental Assisting (Radiography), hold a current Intra Oral radiation licence from the Department of Health and be registered with AHPRA.

All relevant course materials are included.

Materials to bring

Participants should bring their normal protective clothing and appropriate shoes. Lunch is not provided, please bring your own or purchase from the local cafes.
