Drawing Techniques for Design

Overview

This is an ideal short course if you would like to build confidence and skills in drawing. Over the weeks you will also learn tips, tricks and shortcuts from the professionals in the creation of understandable drawings. This could mean new products, improvements, alterations or inventions; spaces, structures or mechanisms. You may have an interest related to Industrial, product or furniture design. It may be in architecture, automotive or engineering; or illustration or interior design. Almost anyone can benefit from improved their skills in imparting ideas in an understandable format.

Course content

Familiarisation with the basic drawing tools
Sketching in perspective without rulers and templates
The importance of ellipses
Building complex forms from simple ones
Modifying proportions
Bringing your work to life; marking it up
Presentation and annotation
Tips, tricks and shortcuts

Ideal for

This course is for anyone wishing to improve their design drawing skills. It is ideally suited to people with an interest in putting 3-dimensional ideas down on paper. This course can be for VCE or mature age students, those working in design related industries, or anyone with an interests or hobby where drawing is useful.

Outcome

Students will experience a number of drawing techniques and gain confidence to continue outside of class. Students will generate a folio of drawings.

All relevant course materials are included.

Materials to bring

HB pencil, sharpener,0.4 Black Fineliner pen, Black Pentel sign pen, plastic ruler (minimum 40cms long), soft white eraser, marker pens you may have (Pantone, Copic or coloured texta), A4 layout pad

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation

Additional notes

Participation has no influence on the selection of students into RMIT award programs. Short Course activities may include opportunity to prepare for a folio, experience of the studio environment, provide an industry and study overview, and assistance with study options

Course Presenter - Kevin Lewis
Kevin Lewis is an industrial designer and a full time teacher in the Product Design Program at RMIT. He has extensive experience and expertise in drawing, both manually and in cad, for product design.
