Creative Lighting Design


Be introduced to the impact of light and architecture. Focus is on the art of lighting to create exciting, vibrant and functional environments. Explore lighting demands for interiors, commercial, urban, retail and domestic projects. Learn the underpinning principles of lighting technology including basic electrical terminology, colour theory and lighting techniques and terms with an introduction to AS1680 Australian Standards for Lighting and BCA Part J6 relative to energy limitation in lighting design. The course will also teach students how to present lighting concepts.

Course content

The course covers the CREATIVE approach to lighting for maximum visual impact in a commercially and environmentally responsible way.

  • Introduction to AS1680 Australian Standards for Lighting and the Building Code of Australia’s energy requirement
  • How to better understand the technical details provided by manufacturers and the like

Ideal for

This course is designed for people who wish to better understand the visual environment. Anybody who wants to make their environment feel more comfortable and appropriate for their use. Typically students come from the following backgrounds. DYI, Interior Decoration. Electricians Architects, electrical wholesalers and lighting reps as well as Engineers and Lighting Designers

Participants will have an understanding of the language and technology of lighting design and be able to communicate with those in the industry successfully. Where appropriate students will be given "hands on" experiences and will better understand: how to think in 3 dimensions, understand the key principals of lighting design, grasp the concept of the interaction of light and architecture, and be able to present their concepts in a clear and concise manner.


The only prerequisite is an understanding of the basic Microsoft Office suite and passion to understand more about light and its impact on our daily lives.
