Graphic Design: Design and Layout

Overview

Learn the basics of design and layout with contemporary graphic approaches and apply them to design project briefs. Fundamental principles of visual composition, layout development & design process will be covered with reference to international and local references, and also the students own practice. Tests and initial layout ideas will be developed through to finished products during these sessions. Projects may include items such as page layout, business identity stationery and promotional materials, personal logos, newsletters or posters.

Ideal for

This is a course designed for people who wish to learn more about graphic communication through type and layout, or for those who work in an area where typography and layout terminology and awareness may be a useful additional skill. It is also suitable preparation for those wishing to enter or re-enter formal study in this area.

Outcome

On completion of this course, participants will have developed sound basic knowledge of typography and layout and applied those skills to a range of projects.

Pre-requisites

Basic knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

This course is at introductory level but it is useful for participants to have prior knowledge of the software and design principles and elements.

Materials supplied

Basic materials will be supplied.

Materials to bring

A USB drive - limited colour printing will be provided

A list of basic drawing materials required, will be supplied with the course confirmation or in the first class and will cost about $20.

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation and must attend 80% of sessions.

Additional notes

Shorter and longer projects are completed during the course and students are encouraged to bring in and work on their own projects when practicable.

Students work in both a computer room for practical work and a classroom for developmental work, discussion and lectures.
