Furniture Design

Overview

You will develop your furniture designs from concept sketch to producing full documentation. Your design will be realised either by building a scale model or a 1.1 prototype. You will use Google SketchUp to produce 3D views and a combination of model making materials to produce a physical model. Students will be introduced to the furniture design process and an overview of both historical & contemporary designer/makers both local and globally. Presentation and display of all work produced within the course.

Those wanting to build their folios for formal furniture design study, to be exposed to the 3D design process, and get their ideas moving from 2 to 3D.

Outcome

By the end the course you will have a better understanding of furniture design processes & materials.

You will have gained skills in drawing both by hand and using Googel SketchUp, measuring, working to scale, model making, photographing and presenting your design.

You will have an expanded knowledge about the industry both locally and internationally.

Pre-requisites

No prior knowledge or experience in design is necessary. A strong interest in design and a commitment to achieving the best outcome will be beneficial.

  • A4 plain sketch layout pad
  • Stanley knife
  • Masking tape
  • d/sided tape
  • Measuring tape 5m
  • Metal ruler 300mm
  • Scissors
  • Laptop with SketchUp (optional)

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation.

Additional notes

Malcolm Thomas trained in 3Dimensional design specialising in furniture design. He has experience in Interior design and runs an agency that provides exhibition and object design services
