Packaging Design

Overview

Keen to learn how to design packaging? Learn the workflow for creating 3-dimensional packaging forms from a practising industrial designer.

You will learn the elements of packaging design while covering a wide variety of packaging methods and materials. The focus of the course is in using the design process to create practical, commercially appropriate packaging designs. The emphasis is on selecting the appropriate packaging form and material. Graphic design of packaging will be covered in this course, but is not the focus of this course.

  • Introduction to the design process and how it relates to creating successful packaging
  • Principles of Communication through packaging design
  • Cardboard packaging design materials, techniques and process
  • Designing other forms of packaging (example blow moulding, thermoformed, foam)
  • Mockup and prototyping techniques
  • Designing Bottles and Containers
  • Demonstration of Packaging design tools and software
  • Sustainability and Packaging design
  • Future packaging innovations

Design students or professional wanting to gain new skills in 3-dimensional packaging design or for those wanting to get a better understanding of the packaging design process.

More information

Outcome

Students will gain a working knowledge of the processes, techniques and skills to implement different forms of packaging. They will use these skills to produce their own packaging design mockups.

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites, but students wihout graphic design experience may be interested in supplementing this course with a graphic design short course.

Facilitator


Luca Abate

Luca is an industrial designer at the award winning video technology company Blackmagic Design. He previously worked as a senior design consultant with Charlwood Design developing products for a diverse range of clients and industries including medical, homewares and electronics. A multifaceted designer, his career has spanned business development, marketing as well as a product design role with the Ford Motor Company. He has also lectured a number of industrial design courses and workshops with RMIT University.
