Japanese Joinery - Project B

Overview

This course is led by a traditionally trained Japanese craftsman & provides participants with a hands-on introduction to Japanese joinery. The course will cover Japanese techniques on how to use hand tools.

In this course, Japanese Joinery - Project B, you will make a small table using post and beam construction methods. Instead of using nails and adhesive, you will learn how to connect legs & rails by timber framing system.

This course is a little more advanced that Japanese Joinery - Project A, but either course can be taken first.

Course content

  • Understanding plans
  • Crafting the top of the legs allowing them to accommodate the rails and front panel
  • Craft the rails with a saw and chisels
  • Curve the end of the rails with chisels
  • Form dovetails on the front panel
  • Cut sliding dovetails underneath of the top
  • Smooth the surface of the materials with a hand plane
  • Assembling

Important Information

Students are encouraged to do some homework to complete the project.

Pre-requisites

Japanese Joinery Project A is not a pre-requisite. The courses are designed to be done in either order. Project B assumes greater skill. You may want to do Project A if your joinery skills are limited
