Digital Illustration using a Stylus and Screen

Overview

This aim of this course is to provide students with the skills & confidence to create their own digital artwork using a tablet & Photoshop's drawing & painting tools.

Through hands-on projects, participants will learn an efficient work flow that will allow them to draw & edit their own ideas from scratch. These digital illustrations may be realistic or highly stylised. The skills can then be used across a large range of areas - from creating elements for film & game design, to concept development for architecture or products, or just for fun.

Course run in a PC lab of Wacom Cintiq screens.

Basic digital drawing skills
Perspective grids
Principles of lighting
Basic colour theory
Creating and editing Photoshop brushes
Imitating paint, pencil and ink effects
Blending modes and filters
Applying textures
Managing layers, groups and masks
Exporting images for print, Instagram and the web

Ideal for

The course will suit people who are interested in learning how to illustrate using digital tablets & Photoshop. The course will be run in a MS Windows lab with Wacom Cintiq tablets & Photoshop software, but the skills will be transferrable to other tablets and the many similar programs.

Outcome

On completion, participants should have developed a good understanding of how to use tablets and Photoshop to create and edit digital artwork.

Pre-requisites

Basic computer skills are essential.
A basic working knowledge of the Photoshop interface is beneficial but not essential.
Basic drawing skills are beneficial, but not essential.

All relevant course materials are included.

Pen/pencil and notebook.

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation.
