Feature Writing with Sian Prior


Media editors are always looking for fresh and engaging freelance feature content, especially when it comes to travel articles, opinion pieces, personal columns, profiles and informative features. In this course we will introduce you to the basics of feature writing and show you how to pitch and sell your work to relevant publications. You will learn how to find an eye-catching ‘angle’, how to write to the traditional formulas of feature articles and how to write for a ‘house-style’.

  • How to come up with a fresh ‘angle’ for a feature article
  • How to tailor your feature articles for a ‘house-style’
  • How to write travel articles
  • How to write opinion pieces and personal columns
  • How to write profiles
  • How to research and write informative features
  • How to identify appropriate publication, then pitch your story ideas and articles to editors.

Public, private and community sector professionals and creatives interested in learning new skills, or refreshing existing ones, in feature writing.

Students will develop an understanding of what editors are seeking from freelance feature writers. They will learn how to identify a fresh angle on a story and pitch it to appropriate publications. They will be introduced to the basic formulas of feature writing, including for travel articles, opinion pieces and personal columns, and informative features. These skills will help them to write commercially publishable articles for print and online media.


Students must be 18 or over and should have an interest in writing for publication.

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation.

Additional notes

Dr Sian Prior is a writer, broadcaster and teacher of journalism and non fiction writing. She has worked as a journalist for 25 years and taught writing at RMIT for over a decade. She also runs community writing workshops and mentors individual writers. Sian has a PhD in Creative Writing and her critically-acclaimed memoir ‘Shy’ (Text Publishing) was published in 2014. sianprior.com
