Sound Production - Opening the DAW

Overview

Keen to get started in Sound Production?  Sound Production - Opening the DAW is a twelve week course that will introduce you to the fundamentals of the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) environment. Focusing on the basics of managing sound, you will gain an understanding of ProTools functions and basic sound capture with a microphone.  You will learn signal flow theory and its importance with both digital and analogue audio systems. 

Course content

  • Introduction to Mac Software functions and data management
  • Introduction to Pro Tools- Virtual Mixer Environment
  • Fundamentals of the EDIT Window
  • Routing of Signal from Audio Track to Busses and Sends
  • Basic Effects: Spatial (Reverb) and Time-based (Delay,Chorus etc)
  • Fundamentals of Equalisation (EQ) and Dynamics (Compression and Limiting)
  • Recognition of Time, Meter and Tempo
  • Introduction to Logic X - Create a simple MIDI piece of music using Logic X instruments
  • Capturing a single channel microphone signal
  • Basic editing using fundamental EDIT and MIXER functions

This course is an ideal introduction for Creatives, Performers and Students interested in pursuing further study in Sound Production.  

Important Information

This course is highly recommended for students who wish to enrol in RMITs Diploma of Music Industry (Sound Production) as it contains key assumed knowledge.
Please note:  Applicants to the full-time Sound Production Diploma (1st year) may apply for a Conditional Offer upon completion of this short course. (Students must attend no less than 80% of classes.)

Outcome

This course will be delivered utilising Digital Audio Workstations, Pro Tools and all necessary hardware.  During this practical course you will gain an understanding of the basics of sound capture and be introduced to editing and mixing functions.

Pre-requisites

  • Basic computer skills
  • An interest in Music Production

Materials supplied

All relevant course materials including software and microphones are included. 

Materials to bring

  • Pen/pencil and notebook
  • Headphones with both a standard headphone jack (Stereo) and a mini Jack (Computer output)
  • USB stick or portable storage device (must be Mac compatible).

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation.

Mark Kelson

Mark Kelson is best known as the front man for Melbourne based outfit The Eternal. Over their more than a decade-long career, The Eternal have released five full-length efforts, three DVD's and a live album to worldwide critical acclaim. Mark is now an established Sound Engineer, Mixer, Producer and increasingly teaching and supervising within the Diploma of Music Industry (Sound Production) at RMIT University.

Anthony (ToK) Norris

Anthony ToK Norris is a Multi-instrumentalist, Producer, Mastering, Recording & Mixing Engineer and Composer who has recorded extensively with international and local Australian artists for over 40 years. He brings his vast experience in Music Production now to RMIT Short Courses. As a current teacher of RMITs Diploma of Music Industry (Sound Production), ToK is the perfect guide to introduce you to the world of Digital Audio Workstations. Awards received by projects upon which ToK has worked include: 6 Arias, 3 AFIs, 1 Platinum and 2 Gold Records, and nomination for the Best Blues Album of the Year (2015).
