AFL Commentary: How to Call a Live Match

Overview

This 4-week course comprising 8 sessions will introduce students to the skills required to begin a sports commentary career in the fast-paced, exciting world of Australian Rules Football. Completing this course will increase the opportunity for participants to enter broadcasting in both commentary and game day production roles, through the provision of hands-on experience.

Current RMIT VE and HE students may also be eligible to participate in RMIT's production of the National Indigenous Radio Service in 2020.

Course content

  • Preparing to call: the skills and process of preparing your call
  • Research techniques: where to find the details that will enhance your performance
  • Learning from the pros: receive feedback from current and past AFL commentators
  • See what it takes firsthand: work with members of the National Indigenous Radio Service
  • Call your first match: prepare for and call your first AFL match. Students will call a Finals match replay from a monitor.

The course is for anyone with a desire to commentate the most exciting game on the planet.

Current RMIT students are eligible for a 15% discount. Indigenous students are strongly encouraged to apply.  Current and former AFL and VFL players also welcome.

Outcome

Students will gain a broader understanding of the intricacies of commentating an AFL match by building the foundation of a commentary portfolio. Most of the work in calling an AFL match happens before the first bounce and students will be taught processes that will help them prepare for any future commentary opportunities. 

Successful RMIT students may be eligible to participate in RMIT's production of the National Indigenous Radio Service in 2020. (More Information)

Pre-requisites

Participants must be 18 years or older and must have a basic understanding of AFL. 

Materials supplied

All relevant course materials will be provided, including team sheets and additional match information for commentary preparation.

Materials to bring

  • Device with internet access
  • Stationery to prep commentary materials.

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Certificate of Completion.

Additional notes

JAM TV coordinator - Jay Mueller is a former Radio Executive Producer at 3AW and Triple M and former matchday producer for Channel 7’s AFL Coverage.

Andrew Underwood and Barry Denner from The National Indigenous Radio Service will provide professional feedback and guidance during the course. 

There will be a number of guest speakers from the industry throughout the course.

Jay Mueller

Jay Mueller has been a journalist and broadcaster for more than 25 years. He has worked for the FOX Television Network in the United States and Seven Network in Australia. Since arriving in Australia in 2003, Jay has worked on number one radio programs: 3AW Mornings with Neil Mitchell, Breakfast with Ross and John and Triple M’s Hot Breakfast with Eddie McGuire. In 2018, Jay launched Gerard Whateley’s sports talk program on SEN in Melbourne. He has extensive field producing work on the biggest stories and events including coverage of three NFL Super Bowls, Australian Cricket in South Africa, the 2016 US Election in Washington DC and Australian Defence Forces in Afghanistan. Jay is the Head of Development for JAM TV Australia. He is also founder and director of Bad Producer Productions, an Australian podcast network.
