Product Knowledge Workshops in Textiles

Overview

RMIT's School of Fashion and Textiles (specialists in the delivery of education and training to the TCF industries) is again presenting its highly acclaimed Workshops in Textile Product Knowledge. The workshops have been specifically designed for current and newly appointed TCF staff wishing to improve their technical knowledge and gain a wider appreciation of the many facets of the total 'textile pipeline' from fibres to fashion.

Course content

19th Jun: Day 1:Textile Fibres & Yarn Technology
20th Jun: Day 2: Knitted and Woven Fabrics
21st Jun: Day 3: Garment Technology
22nd Jun: Day 4: Colour Science, Dyeing, Printing and Fabric Finishing
23rd Jun: Day 5: Care Labelling, Testing/Fastness and Specifications

Students can enrol for all five days or any number of individual days.

Ideal for

These workshops are tailored for Textile, Clothing and Fashion (TCF) personnel:

  • Current employees with merchandising, colour, fashion &design skills, requiring a technical understanding & communication skills to source a specific style, quality or production technique in a proposed garment range.
  • Current employees wishing to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the many facets of the total textile pipeline.
  • People wanting to enter, or engage with, TCF industry.

It is recommended that students complete Day 1 before doing Day 2, it is recommended that Day 1 & 2 are done consecutively.

More information

Outcome

  • Practical understanding of knit & weave processes and fabrics, including properties & qualities, wear performance and assessment methods.
  • Basic principles of colouration of textile materials either by dyeing or printing, including heat transfer and digital printing.
    Laboratory testing, hands on textile testing and analysis of physical and colourfastness properties.
  • Communicate with suppliers with appropriate terminology, describe various garment construction processes with correct terminology.

Facilitator


Mac Fergusson

Mr Mac Fergusson has worked in textile dyeing and finishing for over 40 years, including 4.5 years in Indonesia. He is well acquainted with production plants in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, and has travelled regularly to these countries. As well as being both a Chartered Textile Technologist and a Chartered Colourist, he has a Masters degree in Technology as well as being a past President of the Society of Dyers and Colourists of Australia and New Zealand.

Sam Talbot

Sam is a clothing production, sourcing and operations expert with strong technical knowledge in textiles, product development and supply chain management. She started her ragtrade career in Corporate Apparel learning from the ground up working for Dowd Corporation for nine years. She then launched her own label making tailor made men’s and women’s business shirts in Melbourne. Sam then went on to Country Road as a Product Developer for cut and sew knitwear across men’s, women’s and children’s wear, followed by Production and Sourcing Manager for Elwood Jeans.
Several years ago, Sam moved to Sydney to take up a role as Operations Manager for sass & bide and then Brisbane to do the same role for Lorna Jane. Now back in Melbourne, Sam works freelance for several clothing and fashion labels, assisting them with growth and change management within their organisations.
