Machine Knitting - Level 1

Overview

In this wonderful current environment of old skills being revived and refreshed and the love of craft and the handmade being cherished, there no better time to learn a new skill.

This course will introduce participants to a variety of fundamental techniques and skills that are the basis of creative and practical machine knitting.

Course content

  • Identify all parts of a domestic knitting machine
  • Learning to use the correct tools and knitting terminology
  • Overview of suitable yarns for machine knitting
  • Learn the basic techniques to produce knitted samples including: cast on/cast off, shaping - increase/decrease, hems and finishing techniques, hand manipulated fabrics, patterned fabrics
  • Learn how to knit a hand manipulated or patterned scarf

This course is suited to anyone with an interest in the field of knitted textiles and to those who wish to develop their skills and to learn the basics of how a knitting machine works.

Outcome

On completion of the course the student will have: Created a comprehensive sample folder with notes Made a scarf & record folder of the process Gained the basic skills of machine knitting.

Materials supplied

All materials and knitting machine equipment will be supplied. Participants may supply and use some of their own yarns as part of the learning experience if yarn approved by teacher.

Materials to bring

Pen/pencil, notebook, measuring tape, masking tape and yarn/wool needle.

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation.

Patricia McCarthy-Henry is a textile enthusiast with a BA (hons) in fashion and over 16 years of quality experience in the fashion industry, working directly in design, production and garment development. She teaches knit at RMIT in the Associate Fashion Degree program as well as runs her own knitwear business, pmaxi Knitwear.
