Machine Knitting

Overview

This course will take participants through the process of designing, knitting and finishing a knitted garment with sleeves. You will learn how to modify a basic block to produce their own knitted sweater or wrap cardigan with sleeves using fully fashioned shaping techniques, partial knitting to achieve a neckline and knit a seamless double hem.

Course content

Create tension swatches
Convert cm’s to stitches and rows
Modify a basic block and create your own machine knitting pattern using correct knitting terminology
Learn the Magic Formula for sleeve and armhole shaping
Knitting your own machine knitted garment using the following techniques:

- Cast on/cast off
- Shaping - increase/decrease
- Hems and finishing techniques
- Seaming
- Blocking

This course is suited to anyone who wishes to develop their machine knitting skills further and to learn the fundamentals of how design, knit and finish a machine knitted garment.

Outcome

On completion of the course the student will have:

- Developed more technical skills in machine knitting
- Created their own knitting pattern from a basic block
- Gained skills in blocking and seaming
- Made a knitted garment with sleeves and documented the process

Pre-requisites

Participants must have completed Introduction to Machine knitting or have basic skills in machine knitting, including cast on, cast off, shaping, partial knitting and ravel cord hems.

Materials supplied

All materials and knitting machine equipment will be supplied. Participants may supply and use some of their own yarns as part of the learning experience if yarn approved by teacher.

Award

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Statement of Participation.

Patricia McCarthy-Henry is a textile enthusiast with a BA (hons) in fashion and over 16 years of quality experience in the fashion industry, working directly in design, production and garment development. She teaches knit at RMIT in the Associate Fashion Degree program as well as runs her own knitwear business, pmaxi Knitwear.
