Literary Translation

Overview

This intensive one-week course focuses on a study of methods and theories of literary translation as implemented in the practice of translation of literary texts. 

The course will be facilitated by Dr Nataša Kampmark. Nataša holds a PhD in literature and has taught anglophone literature at universities in Europe and Australia. She is the author of a monograph titled Tri lica australijske proze (Three Faces of Australian fiction, 2004) and co-editor and translator into Serbian of an anthology of contemporary Australian fiction titled Priče iz bezvremene zemlje (Tales from the Timeless Land, 2012). In addition to scholarly articles evaluating literary translations, she has published a number of translations of literary texts as well as translations of literary theory and criticism.

Course content

The theoretical content will be delivered through lectures, debates and group discussions; the practical sessions will focus on analysis, problem-solving, and development of strategies applicable in translation of literary texts across genres.

The morning theoretical classes will run from 09:30 to 12:30
and the afternoon hands-on practice from 13:30 to 17:30

Outcome

Participants will acquire an in-depth knowledge of relevant theories in translation studies and a mastery of key techniques and strategies of literary translation. This course will prepare participants to recognise, understand and deal with complex issues which arise as part of the translation process.

Pen/pencil and notebook. It is highly encouraged that the participants bring their own laptops.
