How to Make a Hit Record & Other Production Secrets

Overview

If you've ever recorded before, and not got the result that you wanted or you're about to embark on your first recording, this workshop is made for you. Take the chance to ask challenging questions about the process, budget, rates and the business of making your record.

By the end of the session, you will be armed with the knowledge you need to make smart decisions about how and when you should commence recording, and how much you should invest init.

  • Determining your goals and why this is important
  • Questions to ask your producer
  • The difference between booking a studio yourself vs. working with a producer, and how it affects your sound
  • Real-world examples to hear the differences beween:
    • Low, mid & high budget productions, and know the cost; The different sound of home, project & commercial studios;
    • Performance & sound of pro sessions players vs. 'mates'
  • Pre-production
    • Before pre-production; What should be covered; Approach; How you should feel when pre-production is 'done'
    • How much should you spend on production
  • What to do next

Ideal for

This course is targeted toward musicians & bands that are considering recording, or, have previously recorded, yielded an underwhelming result, and want to know why, and how to get a better result next time.

Students will have a solid understanding of the following:

  • What really goes into making a commercial sounding record
  • What the sonic outcome of production compromises such as recording at home, or cheap studios
  • How to approach recording & production to get an exciting result that sounds the way you want it to
  • What the real difference between pro-sumer recording gear/DIY & high end/professionals is
  • How much you spend on your production to avoid wasting money
  • How to have a conversation with a prospective producer, gauge their ability & experience

Pre-requisites

Students must be 18 years or older, and writing, performing or producing music.

Materials supplied

All relevant course materials are included.

Students will receive a framework for record production that can be used independently, or with a producer.

Pen/pencil and notebook.

Participants will be awarded an RMIT Certificate of Completion
