Investigation and Analysis Part 1

Experienced investigators know that instinct built on years of practice can only take you so far. When findings are contested, when reports need to hold up to regulatory scrutiny, or when recommendations have to drive real change in a high-risk organisation, the quality of your analytical method becomes visible.

This course, developed with the Qantas Safety Academy and RMIT University, builds the capability to analyse complex safety incidents using structured, evidence-based methods and to communicate those findings in reports that both technical and non-technical stakeholders can understand and act on. It covers the ATSB "no blame" investigation framework and its alternatives, so you can select the right method for any investigation rather than defaulting to a single approach. It also builds your statistical and risk analysis skills, so you can interpret evidence and prioritise safety issues with confidence.

The final project is an investigation report based on a real-world incident scenario: portfolio-ready output demonstrating your capability to employers. The frameworks transfer directly across aviation, rail, marine, resources, and public safety.

This 6-week course is delivered 100% online with flexible, guided learning. You'll work through real incident case studies, culminating in a complete investigation report that demonstrates your ability to analyse evidence, identify contributing factors, and produce recommendations organisations can act on.

After completing this course, you'll walk away with a structured, repeatable approach to incident analysis and an RMIT digital credential which can be validated, recognised, and shared on social media platforms.
